On bad language and "good" girls..

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are people."

Cheris Cramarae
Paula Triechler

I am seething. Raving. Hopping. Mad.
Somehow I seem to have an extremely volatile temper these days, and inane statements from my friends dont seem to help either.
Let me call my illustrious friend N. N and I were hanging out at our usual coffee place, twiddling our thumbs, waiting for the rest of our friends. At that instance, my coffee cup slips and I spill a little bit of the coffee onto my new sweater. Mind you the coffee was boiling, and my new sweater was white in color. So in a fit of annoyance, I uttered a profanity. N, with a condescending expression on his face exclaims, "Good Indian girls dont swear. Its a turnoff for Indian guys."
I was aghast. This was a guy, who cannot speak two sentences without using his 'favorite' profanities, and yes, he has favorites. His expertise in swear words transcends five languages including English, Tamil, Hindi and French. My first instinct was to swear AT him, just to piss him off, but I swallowed my anger, which in my case is NOT a good idea(think calm before the storm), and I asked him to elucidate on his enlightening reasoning behind this statement. Surprise, surprise he had no reasoning whatsoever, he just 'knows' that Indian girls should'nt swear because it does not suit them.
This sad as it is, and however far fetched it may seem, is a child of a patriarchal society, which is one of the downfalls of modern India. My estimation is not limited only to one gender, Ive had Indian girls tell me that using profanity is a sin against God (Where did God come into the picture?),and quite hypocritically and predictably, Ive heard them spew forth a barrage of swear words, when they're angry or upset over something.
This is the seed of patriarchy, where boys are made to believe that women should be 'pure' and 'virginal' and they shouldn't expect anything less from a girl. The girls are fed the exact same poison; they have to live upto an arbitrary 'virginal' image and god forbid, if they stray away and try to be HUMAN for a little bit. Either girls are little sanctimonious virgins or filthy prosititutes. Whatever happened to a 'middle ground'? This partiarchy in turn breeds hypocrisy , since you cant do anything openly, put up a 'holier than thou' image and 'live' life on the sly.
Unfortunately our society harbors a deep hatred for anything to do with the feminine and puts lofty ideals on the girls head, but boys are left scot free, because 'boys will be boys', oh, how I hate that statement with a smoldering rage.
To all the N's( Im sorry N, I warned you) and all the sickeningly righteous 'others', all I have to say is:
Go Fuck yourselves.
There, I said it. So sue me.

well, my opinion is tat, jus a bit of bad language doesnt change the fact if a girl is gud or bad!!! let it be guys or gals!! but as u point out, reason for bias here is unnecessary.....

off topic: saw on ur profile tat u r frm Detroit!! I was in Detroit until Dec....moved to Baltimore only in Jan!!! I was in Wayne State......

Abacharam.. abacharam..

Huh.. enna heat...

Well Megha.. a real nice post.. but I guess the reason for ur friend's surprise is that he is not used to seeing girls swear (an most guys tend to think women as soft natured) .. infact not many come across girls who swear.. and I have also seen many girls who do not like other girls who swear..

but I have a question.. why is that most of the girls (atleast the ones I have seen ) use only English to Swear..(esp the F word)
is it coz ur vocab in Tamil/ Hindi is bad or ur find it decent to use the F-word and does swearing in Tamil/hindi sound more profane and vulgar to you?? Coz u too used only the F word.

the wannabe indian punkster said...

Well yes! that was so unecessary from his side...I wonder if he realises that we are in the 21st century now....and youre from Wayne State???? Nice....I go to Wayne State too!!!

the wannabe indian punkster said...

@ vishy: that is a farce. Girls not liking other girls who swear is-A-Farce. An act. It is an act put up only for the benefit of guys around them to present a sanctimonious image and nothing else. And what is soft natured? So if I swear I am not soft natured? What if I cry at the sight of blood, I cant watch horror movies and I hate cruelty to animals, BUT I swear(this is not a description of me...its an example), am I not soft natured????
well well.....I think I should reduce my acerbic tone......and I used the english profanity because I thought it fit the post:)
and finally after all this I jus wanna say.......welcome to the turf!

In my opinion people who swear are actually more pure and good at heart. In fact I dont like a person who doesn't swear... its just too phony.
Well the proof of my theory is that we (the saner people who use curse words) use it so much that the effect of it diminishes. I can call my friend "Fucker" just for fun... that does not mean he is one. Just take it as a slang. I have commited these words to my lexicon (which i duly change when talking to relatives ;)

I have met a few girls who stutter when u say a curse word and guys who look uncomfortable... I dont give a damn to them. I consider them gullible and vulnerable to fumble at the use of some words... thats crap.

I think like all the societies, in India, whatever is difficult is considered a sin. It works for most of the stuffs like murder etc, but fails dismally for something like premartial sex. Americans have their own prejudices. and we i guess are at the advantage of viewing both the cultures from a third person's stand point... Ignorance is bliss, but somtimes you do feel that bliss is ignorance.

and megha your post are always bang on target with the audience... you are getting more comments than Joel Spolsky :D, the star blogger.... That calls for a celebration.

the wannabe indian punkster said...

Thanks Sridhar....for some reason....things which make me mad..seems to garner more comments...than normal things....so celebration eh? How about your famous alu gobhi?:P
And yes people are phony when they say they dont like to swear. Dont they ever get angry...ever? Are they endowed with the patience of a rock? Its just a farce...and Indians buy it or want to buy it.

Sridhar said...

hmmm... I dont those words when I am angry... I use them I am surprised or shocked. I have better ways to vent out my anger ... ( I hire hitmen to kill them... lolz... I kindda mentally torture them to semi comatose state).

seems like u ain't botherd about gals who loath swear words but more bout the guys who do n try to make inane rationalizations (which women do on par)?

y so? ryu ascertaining that a guy should'nt judge a gal for having used swear words (after all he is a human too ain't he)? dun know y u mull over this unless u care for what the guy said, proly afraid of being branded. dun ans, just think over

when ppl want to thrust their opinion, they generalize it like in this case. what if it were a women who said that tyu, ur mom or someone such? wud u be raging with the same intersity :-?, ur wud u just *sigh8 n move on?

as for the pure n virginal stuff, don't be so judgemental, women don't quite care if a guy is tainted, they live with it, for whatever reason they have been forgiving n hence the beliefs. so don't just blame the guys. fundamentally a women buyz a guy even if he is tainted, well who asked u to?

I'v known guys who get drunk n sleep with the beggars, can u handle such? now this is a very decent experience I am talking bout, such a guy would still sell

but what when a women indulges in such profanity? 4get bout the what guyz think? if u can handle it personally without guilt why dyu care what the society has to say?

besides a gal is mature @ a much younger age than a guy, in most cases, which is y gals stop profanity much earlier, n guyz still remain caught in that web

no one is righteous, everyone puts on a facade for the society, if u can handle the reaction of the society for u being profane, well n gud, but if u don't have the courage to ... dun try blaming the society, they dun change in a few years, u better work ur way out, dun crib obet other opinion, everybodu has one ;)

u ppl still think of just ur restraints from freaking out as young blood, think of urself 15 years from now and what u'd preach then, u'd proly preach the very same stuff to ur next generation as the guy said or ur parents say today (a bit milder of course) ... *ain't that hipocracy?* now if ur gonna be preaching otherwise, i.e. not discouraging and facing the profanity of ur progeny in society, then I'll give it to you

now if ur gonna argue that ppl change with time and u wanna taste of life to the fullest, then be prepared to taste the bitter side of it too ;), so trip on life s u see it fit, n dun just crib bout the consequence, face it :p

quite honestly all this being kewl with profanity only works until u study, no boss is gonna be game with such, neither wud u within 5 years, hopefully ;)

yuvraj said...

profanity is not a sin...u cant curb ur anger..u have to express in some way..so..swearin will help u too relieve some pressure....

As an indian male, i dont think its a turn off.. Besides if someone has favourites and sswears in multiple languages i dont think he has the right to say anything to start with.

Besides coffee stain on a new white sweater (holy crap!! the fkin sweater was new for fks sake...) deserves a few profanities at the least..

Dont bother with the hypocrites.

@ Venkat: Of course...history repeats itself....and women repeatedly do that to themselves.

@ Nayan: Thanks Nayan for having my back! Ill give you his number....LOL

@ S: Well what does the height of a person have to do with feminism anyway?????? My views and feelings on feminism has nothing to do with something as vague as the height-of-the-person-I-mention-in-a-TAG-and-other-far-out-RANDOM-statements. So "leftovers of patriarchy" has nothing to do with the height of a so called "lover"...or whatever. And anyway I go through phases:P....right now I seem to fall for tall, lanky(a la Aslam in Rang De Basanti)guys. Before this I was in a Lenny Kravitz phase(which has nothing to do with height) and before this I liked the guy from Train(who is extremely short BTW:)). So there you have it. In simple terms without all this brouhaha its only a personal preference....err.....for the moment anyway..until I change my mind and spot another celebrity......:P

the wannabe indian punkster said...

@Manish: Hypocrisy is everywhere....girls as well as guys react strongly to something as simple as swearing...Ive had girls lecture me on how I should behave and talk in front of guys in order to maintain an "image" in front of them. Mind you...on one occassion Ive had a group of "wellwishers": a bunch of girls gave me "advice" on the right way to behave in order to be friends with a guy.....WHAT? I could hardly restrain myself from bursting out into peals of laughter...I unsuccessfully arranged my face into a somber expression and sat through the sermon.
This is to just illustrate that gender bias BEGINS with men,and on a lot of occassions is CARRIED out by these poor women who have no sense of self....whatever sexist statements they hear and see from these "guys"...they try to emulate it....and this breeds hypocrisy.

Haha Megha, that's some cool attitude you got.

I loved the part about sanctimonious virgins vs. filthy prostitutes. What I find even more funny is how the sanctimonious virgins BELIEVE THE LIE, to quote a line from the X-Files.

It's one thing if you're brought up to think that way to protect yourself against nasty evil virginity-pilfering boys, but to strut around and look down your noses thinking and believing that "I won't have sex with you or swear with you because I'm a sanctimonious virgin" is just plain hilarious. :-)

Yo... I object.. this has nothing to do with India. A couple of Fresh on board desis sitting in cold America might be feeling guilty and overprotective about their perception of Indian culture..

Isnt it serious misconception to conclude that it is a result of Indian patriarchial society. Its the result of a few people's heigtened sense of anxiety towards their own insecurities.

But ya, I agree that there are double standards. But it has nothing to do with India.

People like to think of India as this beautiful land culturally sueprior and all this a-la-carte of bullshit. At the end of the day, its another place on earth like anywhere else.

"Infact my experience says that India advances much farther than what the pravasi Indians would care to credit it with. many of my friends suddenly started going to temples in USA.. What a lovely blog! I extremely doubt whether there actually exist men who do not swear, but women. yes. loads.

Hypocrites eh? in my experience, the seraphic angels who do not swear in public perpetually let off their steam in private (which is not as attractive and twice as harmful - nobody ever heard bottling up your anger could ever be good. bad for the heart, I believe.)
Now the men. I don't think I've ever met a fellow who doesn't swear. Swearing is the personification of men.
And Men are the epitomes of profanity.
Well, what say you?

the wannabe indian punkster said...

Thank you so much! And welcome to the turf!
Swearing is 'cool' and 'in' when men do it...it is supposedly a form of male bonding when a few swear words are casually thrown in a conversation, but when a woman swears, she falls from the pedastal of 'virginal' purity and people act as if it is a cardinal sin. Oh for the love of god, why dont men and some women realise that women are human too?

Sorry messed up my previous comment.

Yes I get what you mean.I've heard a lot of folks say this,"hmm a woman swearing makes me uncomfortable".Personally I think swearing is a gender-irrespective birthright.Personally I resort to minimal swearing only in times of extreme emotions like road rage.
(oh and that is another emotion that good girls ought not to have).

More often than not, many Indian swear words and profanities seem to me a little sexist and patriarchical in their origin. So I am much comfortable with the oh-so-convenient generic F-Word.
